Calixa Lavallée, the well-known French-Canadian composer, composed the music and Adolphe-Basile Routhier the words of “O Canada”, which was first performed in Quebec City on 24 June during the Saint-Jean-Baptiste celebrations.  The song rapidly gained popularity in Quebec and was regarded as the national song of French Canada.
